African Mathematics: History, Textbook and Classroom LessonsBy Mr Robin Walker

African Mathematics: History, Textbook and Study Guide aims to meet several objectives. Firstly, the book gives a historical overview of Africa and its contribution to Mathematics. Secondly, the book provides the teacher and the learner with study materials that can be used in the classroom. Thirdly, the book introduces some of the numerical patterns and puzzles that has fascinated one of the authors John Matthews. Fourthly, the book introduces the lectures, classes and workshops that the two authors teach on these subjects. Mathematics has an interesting history in Africa. This history forms the first part of the book. The earliest known mathematical artefact in human history is the Lebombo Bone. Thought to be 37,000 years old, it was discovered by archaeologists in South Africa. Scholars believe that the number system carved into the bone represents a lunar calendar. Later mathematical evidence comes from the Ishango region of Central Africa, Ancient Egypt, Medieval North Africa, Ethiopia, Medieval West Africa and Medieval Central Africa. Mathematics teachers have asked for material that can be used in the classroom where these African mathematical ideas can be used, tested or even challenged. To this aim, the second part of the book presents classroom material that can engage children. Each lesson demonstrates a mathematical principle followed by classroom exercises that the pupils can attempt. We have provided perhaps 22 hours worth of teaching and learning material. The third part of this book was written wholly by John Matthews, a secondary school mathematics teacher. It contains a sample of his tips and short cuts that any pupil of mathematics can profitably use to improve their engagement with number. Mr Matthews also believes that students of mathematics should enjoy detecting patterns in number sequences. In the fourth part of the book he presents a sample of his own discoveries in this area. He also presents classroom exercises that the pupils can attempt.

Stick and Rudder: An Explanation of the Art of Flying

From the Back Cover

WHAT'S IN STICK AND RUDDER:* The invisible secret of all heavier-than-air flight--the Angle of Attack. What it is, and why it can't be seen. How lift is made, and what the pilot has to do with it. * Why airplanes stall* How do you know you're about to stall?* The landing approach. How the pilot's eye functions in judging the approach. The visual clues by which an experienced pilot unconsciously judges: how you can quickly learn to use them.* "The Spot that does not move." This is the first statement of this phenomenon. A foolproof method of making a landing approach across pole lines and trees.* The elevator and the throttle. One controls the speed, the other controls climb and descent. Which is which?* The paradox of the glide. By pointing the nose down less steeply, you descend more steeply. By pointing the nose down more steeply, you can glide further.* What's the rudder for? The rudder does NOT turn the airplane the way a boat's rudder turns the boat. Then what does it do?* How a turn is flown. The role of ailerons, rudder, and elevator in making a turn.* The landing--how it's made. The visual clues that tell you where the ground is.* The "tail-dragger" landing gear and what's tricky about it. This is probably the only analysis of tail-draggers now available to those who want to fly one.* The tricycle landing gear and what's so good about it. A strong advocacy of the tricycle gear written at a time when almost all civil airplanes were taildraggers.* Why the airplane doesn't feel the wind. Why the airplane usually flies a little sidewise.* Plus: a chapter on Air Accidents by Leighton Collins, founder and editor of AIR FACTS. His analyses of aviation's safety problems have deeply influenced pilots and aeronautical engineers and have contributed to the benign characteristics of today's airplane.FLAP COPY STICK AND RUDDER is the first exact analysis of the art of flying ever attempted. It has been continously in print for thirty-three years, and has enjoyed steadily increasing sales. Flight instructors have found that the book does indeed explain important phases of the art of flying, in a way the learner can use. It shows precisely what the pilot does when he flies, just how he does it, and why. These basics are largely unchanging. The book therefore is applicable to large airplanes and small, old airplanes and new, and is of interest not only to the learner but also to the accomplished pilot and to the instructor himself. When STICK AND RUDDER first came out, some of its contents were considered highly controversial. In recent years its formulations have become widely accepted. Pilots and flight instructors have found that the book works.Today several excellent manuals offer the pilot accurate and valuable technical information. But STICK AND RUDDER remains the leading think-book on the art of flying. One thorough reading of it should be the equivalent of many hours of practice.

About the Author

Wolfgang Langewiesche first soloed in 1934 in Chicago. Early in his flying he was struck by a strange discrepancy: in piloting, the words and the realities did not agree. What pilots claimed to be doing in flying an airplane, was not what they did in practice. Langewiesche set himself the task of describing more accurately and realistically what the pilot really does when he flies. The first result was a series of articles in Air Facts, analyzing various points of piloting technique. In 1944 Stick and Rudder was published.

If you fly or know someone who does -- buy this book! You may literally save their lives some day. It's a steal for a hard cover volume and it's one of the best texts on stick & rudder flying I've ever read. I'm an Air Force Academy grad with a degree in Astronautical Engineering. I know all the equations of flight and have tested wings in a lab. I was also a Jet Instructor Pilot for several years and also have a small out of Cessna 172 time (I just didn't enjoy props). Been out of flying for 30 years.I then took a ride in a glider and fell in love with soaring! You hardly use the rudder in normal jet flying so I had a lot to "re-learn" about how important it is in light aircraft. One of my glider instructor's recommended this book. I was skeptical, but quickly fell in love with it. It was written many years ago and the old wording and line drawings just added to my interest. You won't find any equations or graphs -- but sound words from a pilot who knows how to fly.

This is THE book to read if you are a) learning to fly, b) want to learn to fly, c) already know how to fly or d) want to refresh what you might've forgotten about flying. As a CFI / CFII / MEI / AGI and former airline Check Airman, this book is THE BIBLE. Should be required reading for every aviator (because that is who I try to produce as an instructor: Aviators, not just pilots).

I bought this book recently after having read another copy I had years ago. That copy was destroyed in a bad thunderstorm that flooded my rented garage and destroyed a number of books. There are things that your flight instructor may either forget to mention, or not deem that important. Anyway, whether you get your ticket or not this book will teach you how to fly an airplane, how each control works and how not to wind up on terra firma before your are ready. There are lots of criticisms of this book but I'll eave that to the pundits. This is the only book you will ever need on the fundamentals of flying. Order this book in paper format. Annotate it, then pass it on to your kid, grand kid or some else your are mentoring in the joy of aviation.

Although originally written in 1944, at a time when radial engines were still the norm, this is the best book ever explaining the mechanics of piloting a small airplane.Over the last 20 years I've bought many copies of this book. I always end up giving them away as gifts and have to buy another.

If you are a pilot and if you are able to fly "by the seat of your pants" then this book explains the phenomena perfectly. You have somehow come to grips with how a wing works, maybe from all those trips as a kid when you held your hand out of the backseat window of a car as it sped down the road and marveled at the notion of lift. Seems so, so simple--and it is! This book just puts it all into airplane perspective. If you are a natural pilot, this is a must read. If you stiffly fly by rote from what you were taught and would like to become a natural pilot, this book will help you do that.

Pilots need to know many things. Modern glass panels, navigation, communication, meteorology, regulations, physics... the list is close to endless. But the most important is how to safely and properly fly the plane. It is the first rule. And this book can help your skills with the stick. (and the rudder)

Best book on flying I ever read, period. It is also the only book I ever read that definitely and measurably improved my flying skills. This is so good that I bought several more as Christmas gifts for fellow pilots. Reading this should be mandatory before anyone ever solos an airplane. After you read it and understand it you will be a better pilot in small aircraft.

If you are interested in learning to fly or just interested in learning about flying. This is the book to buy. The writing is clear and fresh even though written over 50 years ago. The simple diagrams helped me understand a very complex subject. My Certified Fight Instructor (CFI) swears by it. That is, when he's not cursing my performance. ;o)Flying Boats & SpiesChina Clipper, a Nick Grant AdventureChina Clipper: The Age of the Great Flying BoatsJeppesen Airway Manual Approach Chart Protector AM621164King Take-off Videos: Jeppesen Chart Review; Enroute, Departures & Arrivals

If you are into science fiction-you'll love this book. It's an Ender's Game meets Stephen Hawking meets the Chinese Cultural Revolution type book. This book is pretty involved for me to give a meaningful synopsis because the book has a lot of characters and it's steeped in Chinese culture and science and space and aliens. The main story is: scientists in China set up a huge satellite and sent messages into space, hoping to contact aliens and they did and totally made the Earth stick out like a sore thumb in the galaxy. There are factions that like the idea of aliens and factions that do not and then there are the aliens, but since they are so far away, any real contact is going to take a little time. I can't go further because it will spoil the enjoyment of this book. I've probably said too much. This is an enjoyable work and it's translated very well with lots of informative footnotes regarding Chinese culture-the author is just as interesting as his works. This is a trilogy and the other books will be translated into English. I would love to read the next two books in the series.

This is the most impactful sci-fi series I've ever read. What I mean by that, is that this series has permanently changed: the way I look at the stars, the way I perceive time, the way I think about life, the way I think about SETI, the way I think about the meaning of life, the way I think about human beings' place in the universe, the way I view technology, etc. This series well and truly "blew my mind away". This isn't a page0-turning space opera adventure kind of story. The story is interesting and good, and there is most definitely some drama and entertainment - and the writing is excellent (translation to English is superb). But the main thing for me about this series is that it educated me about physics and really made me look at EVERYTHING through a new lens. The ideas in this book I had never encountered before - and I am a voracious reader. I found this series to be totally original and mind-blowing. There were time where I simply needed to put it down after reading only a short time, in order to simply ponder the ideas presented. I've never had quite an experience like this with a book.Highly recommend this series. And, make sure you read all three, because each one is better than the last. The last book of the series was my favorite and just absolutely melted my brain. I mean, to the degree where I am questioning my own reality. Yes, it is that good. Really, a mind and perception altering experience.

It's impossible to rate this book on it's own since it's part of a stunning trilogy, and the quality of this book only really shines in the context of the whole. Cixin gets very technical in parts, and descriptions of physics can go on, and on. For that reason, I am glad that I had an audiobook for this one. I'm an academic, and already do a lot of reading, and some sections would start to feel more like work than relaxation. Still, I might have drifted off a little here and there during the most intense technical descriptions, but still paid enough attention to learn a bit about the speed of light, black holes and different dimensions.I also put the series down in the middle of the second book when I realized that there was not a single female character left that was a significant part of the narrative. But, I came back to it eventually, and I'm so glad I did. As it turns out, the 3rd book is largely from a feminine point of view, and thinking back, I'm pretty sure that Cixin was intentionally emphasizing a masculine point of view in the second book.Otherwise, the incredible scope of this book and the sheer audacity of even trying to tell this the story Cixin tells is breathtaking. It even has the quality of a fairy tale, but not a modern Disney version, more like the old dark folk tales of the past. Cixin waxes and wanes from optimism and despair, destruction and renewal and yin and yang throughout. As with life, there is no fairy tale ending, the story just ends when it ends.I'm going to be thinking about this story for many years to come.

I was on the fence about this book for a couple of years but I finally took the plunge and am extremely happy that I did! The reviews seemed to be a bit of a mixed bag and I saw some people suggest that it lacked interesting characters. Having read this book as well as its two sequels I can firmly say that this is not the case. There are several compelling and interesting characters in this book.Above all else the plot, world-building and pacing of the book are completely top notch. To have a hard sci-fi book that is not about space marines and laser guns but still manages to be a page-turner that you can't put down is an amazing achievement! This book represents the best in science fiction. It's about big ideas and examining possibilities. I refuse to discuss the plot but if you have an interest in science and technology and love the hard sci-fi genre, stop reading this review and order the book immediately!I will provide one disclaimer. If you have no interest in science whatsoever or just lack an aptitude or understanding of it, this book series may not be for you. You don't need to be a rocket scientist to enjoy this book but you probably will need to have at least a baseline understanding of some basic scientific principals and/or a willingness to google some stuff.Anyway, get it!!
