In the SIX SIGMA courses -I got mine 4 weeks Black Belt training course in 2008- you learn a lot of tools..one of the difficulties you may experience is fitting them in a rational fashion inside the DMAIC frameset. Here it is the strong point of this book: it is a well designed summary with a complete and exhaustive set of tools smartly divided in the DMAIC structure.One can easily find when a tool can be used, how to recall it in MINITAB and how the results can be interpreted.Basically, to me, THIS IS NOT a book intended for understanding what SIX SIGMA is, it is not addressed to newcomers but has to be intended as to be a really very good schematic summary of the subject. No statistical proofings, no mathematical explanations (only few of them when necessary).3rd edition sa been enreached by new chapters regarding DOEs and Lean matters. Also the chapters on the software Quality Companion is not that bad. I like Quality Companion: it is the perferct software for keeping track of your improvement projects and for writing nice presentations for the customer or the management about your projects ongoing.
I purchased this book hoping it would help me quickly patch some gaps in my understanding of statistics and Minitab v14. And it will. Most importantly, they get that we don't want to take a course, we just want to know enough to get the work done. --- So the book has enough of an explanation to help the reader figure out whatever their working on. Perfect!As background, I had quite a bit of training in statistics a few years ago. My job did not require that I use most of it. Now, I'm in a job that does, and I need to get up to speed quickly. I found this book to be a good refresher and reference.Having been exposed to the different tools, I understand them in general but which do I use? The book has decision grids.When it comes to using Minitab's menus to apply the theory, what goes where when I'm filling in the blanks - How is the theory applied? Added to that, I used some features of Minitab v13 - but v14 seems to be a whole lot different. The book shows screen shots from Minitab v14 with callouts explaining the fields.And, how do I interpret the results? The book shows an example with callouts explaining the results. There is also an appendix with detailed (but brief) explanations of interpretations in an easy to read table.The book is better than Shaums outline on statistics. More relevant than textbooks. More concise than my Six Sigma training binders. Even more applied than Cartoon Guide to Statistics. And, really helps with providing details from the formula used to calculate Sample Size to the number of groups that should be in a histogram and Hypothesis Testing.Just one thing to note: The book is basically the Six Sigma framework with the references to Minitab & statistical tools as relevant. So, don't be surprised that in the first portion, Minitab examples are few and far in between. Rest assured - they are in there.So, I'm ditching my thick binders, books of theory, and heavy textbooks and keeping this one close by.
I bought this series for my friend, Dr. Salman Mishari, and the following is his review.I found this book series straightforward and to the point. It's an excellent choice for those looking for practice questions to review the body of knowledge before the exam.Perhaps, the difficulty level of some questions is beyond L1 but the book provides hints for most difficult questions.
I have been using this book (among others), and its previous edition, to train green belts for five years now. I have not yet found a book that explains key concepts in such plain language that almost all students grasp the lessons the first time. The Minitab exercises are well explained, and when I ask students to rate the book at the end of the training they have all said I should continue to use it in future sessions. How's that for Voice of the Customer? I does not cover everything I teach (e.g. Multi-Vari charts) but what it does cover, it covers in an accessible and concise manner. Thanks, Quentin.
I came to know about the `Lean Six Sigma Minitab' book through a colleague while I was preparing for my Six Sigma Black Belt Certification exam. It took me only few minutes reading to realize this book's content and material and ordered it immediately so I can have my own copy. Minitab is powerful software yet not intuitive to jump on and use it effectively unless someone had training on it. Even with introductory training and I have never taken enough time to understand it and use it effectively to its full potential till I have found this wonderful book telling me what I am looking at the screen. I am an engineer working on Continuous Improvement projects and this book is indispensable for my work and for the type of project I am working on. This particular book in my opinion is a must to have book if you are dealing with large amount of statistical data. I found the book to be more than a Minitab reference book it is also a Six Sigma practitioner's companion for a quick check on terminologies and definitions.As an engineer, I would have liked it to have more engineering related problems discussed but for what this book was intended, I do highly recommend it.I have also made a recommendation of this book for the member of Continuous Improvement Council to be used as a supplemental book in addition to the training materials.Zekarias Yohannes
